~ Who and What is On Trial ~
~ THE LATCH OPENS, AND EVERY NAME ACQUIRES A DIFFERENT WEIGHT ~
“A roll call becomes a trial when every name answers for what was done beneath it.”
The latch moved at the end of I. D. 9 without thunder, and the room beyond it is not empty. Fourteen names wait there, though not fourteen defendants of one kind. God is present because God has been invoked. Christ is present because His many offices have been separated, sentimentalized, and recruited. The Spirit is present because invisible authority has been claimed beneath His name. Revelation and Genesis are present because Scripture can be faithful while its custody becomes violent. Cain is present because guilt must not become reduction. Abel’s blood is present because testimony must not become ammunition. The Church and Christianity-as-System stand near one another without being collapsed. The Reader, author, and writing stand where observers usually hide. Judgement appears as an injured estate. Last, the Court enters its own architecture before the architecture mistakes naming for innocence. This is no administrative roll. Each name changes the meaning of trial, the burden of proof, the available protection, and the kind of verdict that could be lawful. Trial is therefore entered as disciplined exposure to truth. It does not mean the creature has built a throne above the Creator. It does not mean Christ is suspected of the counterfeits made from Him, the Spirit reduced to an impulse, Scripture made guilty for every interpreter, or the victim’s blood cross-examined into silence.
It does not mean Church and system are identical, Reader and author equally powerful, writing independently conscious, Judgement corrupt by nature, or the Court entitled to enjoy its own severity. The repeated formula is a chamber with fourteen acoustics. In one it examines invocation. In another, office. In another, claimed inspiration. In another, custody. In another, agency. In another, appropriation. In another, institutional fruit. In another, desire. In another, authorship. In another, rhetoric. In another, dispossession. In the last, jurisdiction itself. Anyone who hears only accusation has missed the changing law of the room. The production must make that change audible. Cosmic severity cannot mean fourteen identical crescendos, each louder than the last, until grandeur becomes anesthesia. Some names should enter beneath silence. Some require the dry sound of paper placed upon wood. Some should be heard as if the old receiver has caught a transmission too large for its speaker. Some need no music because the human evidence is already unbearable. The weathered voice may carry distance, but never borrowed omniscience. Cleverness may turn the chamber and reveal that the observer was already seated inside it, but cleverness may not make a person disappear beneath the turn. Every section will carry its own epigraph, its own interrogative field, and its own protection against counterfeit use. The closing name will not complete the trial. It will make the docket necessary. Once who and what have standing, the Court can finally disclose the sequence by which they will be heard.
