I.B.S.3 WHERE: Where Specialization Occurs

The bench seemed an obvious answer when I asked where the learner's specialization occurred. His tools lay there, the supervised pieces waited there, and the practiced movement could be seen in his hands. Then he described a weakness noticed on the route, a material difference discovered in the store's better light, and an expectation that followed him after he left the work. The capacity was concentrated in a person whose practice depended upon relations extending beyond the visible place. Location mattered, but location alone did not tell us how the function was formed or sustained. WHERE begins by keeping that distinction open. We can identify the place where an operation appears and still miss the conditions making it possible. We can also follow those conditions so broadly that the focused capacity disappears into an account of everything. Neither answer serves the work. The learner had acquired a particular judgment; it was not distributed equally through the path, the keeper, or the wood. That judgment had developed through encounters with all of them. I wanted an account exact enough to locate the capacity and wide enough to preserve its supports. The question becomes more demanding when specialization is compared across cells, persons, disciplines, and societies. A recurring pattern of differentiation does not make those arrangements identical. It gives us a route of inquiry whose crossings need examination. The bench could help us think about concentration, supporting conditions, and reduced alternatives. It could not become the master vocabulary for every process elsewhere. We needed to ask where the resemblance illuminated a relation and where it began concealing differences that a more responsible explanation had to retain.

The repairer used a biological image to explain why a focused function could gain capability while becoming less available for other uses. The image helped the learner see the relation between formation and constraint. It did not explain the mechanism by which a particular cell differentiates, and it did not decide what the learner ought to consent to. We kept those limits beside its usefulness. An analogy can disclose a conceptual pattern without supplying an actual account of every domain it touches. The danger grows when the image becomes persuasive enough to relieve us of asking further questions. The keeper could say the learner had specialized and then use the biological comparison to suggest that returning to another route was against his nature. That conclusion had not been established. A person's role involves purposes, explanations, choices, institutions, and possibilities of response that do not operate in the same way in a cellular process. The learner could understand the intake limit, contest an expectation, and revise an undertaking. We were not entitled to infer those human terms from an image of differentiation elsewhere. I also resisted reversing the analogy into a promise that every material specialization could be changed because a person could change a role. That would import human agency in the other direction. WHERE needs evidence appropriate to the process examined. We can use the image to ask how supporting conditions permit a particular function, which alternatives become constrained, and what kind of change remains possible. The answers must return from the actual domain rather than be carried into it as finished conclusions from the domain that first made the image attractive.

The learner asked whether the capacity resided in his hands or in the arrangement around them. The question offered a choice sharper than the work could support. His practiced judgment belonged to him in a way it did not belong to the keeper. Yet the tools, instruction, materials, and uses affected what he could accomplish through that judgment. We could locate a formed competence without pretending that competence operated independently of every relation. We could identify sustaining conditions without treating the person as an interchangeable point where conditions happened to converge. The distinction mattered when a different tool produced a different result. The learner had not become a different person between the two attempts. The operation had changed because a consequential support differed. It mattered again when the same tool in another person's hands did not produce the same repair. The tool was not the whole capacity. WHERE has to ask where focused function is concentrated and how its operation meets the field around it. I wanted to preserve the difference between possession of a skill, access to its conditions, and successful use under a particular demand. A person may retain competence while losing access to materials. An arrangement may supply materials while lacking somebody prepared to use them. A successful operation may show that the relation presently works without proving that each part can reproduce the result elsewhere. The learner's question became more useful when it allowed these distinctions instead of demanding one final address for the whole function. His capacity was situated, but being situated did not make it either sovereign over its supports or absent from the account of what the supports helped him do.

We followed one repaired carrier from the bench to the place where it was loaded. There, a different person judged the repair by whether the carrier served the intended task, not by whether the sequence at the bench had been followed neatly. The two positions revealed different aspects of the same function. The learner could explain the joint and its preparation; the user could explain how the object was carried and where its use strained the repair. Neither view canceled the other. The capacity remained focused, but its consequence traveled. A boundary around specialized practice can make preparation and responsibility intelligible while still admitting information from beyond the recognized place. If the learner's account ended at the bench, it might preserve a method that failed in use. If the user's account ignored preparation, it might demand a result the present practice could not support. We needed a relation through which the accounts could meet without assigning either one universal authority. WHERE therefore includes the routes through which function becomes consequential, not only the point where it is named. The movement from making to using is one such route in the encounter I imagine. Other domains require other explanations of how an effect travels and where feedback can enter. We cannot assume that a human conversation at a loading place describes every returning influence elsewhere. The conceptual pattern gives us a question about boundaries, supports, and consequences. It does not give us the same mechanism in every arrangement. The learner heard a particular use condition and revised the test. That was a human learning relation situated around a material operation, with differences that mattered to both the work and the account.

The repairer and another practitioner compared methods for judging weakness in wood. They shared some questions and approached others through different preparations. Their inquiry began to look like a discipline in miniature: a focused way of asking, testing, distinguishing evidence, and teaching what had been learned. I did not want the resemblance to erase the difference between an individual's skill and an organized field of inquiry. The learner might master one method without possessing the whole body of questions the practitioners were trying to sustain. The field might preserve methods and distinctions beyond any one participant while still depending upon people who understood how to use them. Specialization in a discipline concerns its practices of inquiry, the evidence it admits, and the scope of the questions it can responsibly answer. It is not explained by treating the discipline as a large cell or a person with one mind. The analogy may help us notice differentiation and supporting conditions, but those conditions need their own account. We asked which observations could challenge a preferred method and how the challenge would be examined. The learner's returned piece could become evidence rather than an embarrassing exception to the method's reputation. The practitioners could preserve a useful distinction while revising the explanation attached to it. That relation belonged to organized inquiry, not only to the competence of the individual presenting the piece. WHERE became more exact when it allowed the discipline to contribute a difference to our understanding. A focused field can concentrate attention and extend knowledge through shared methods, but its particular success does not establish that every neighboring question must become an illustration of the same method before it is permitted to matter.

The keeper wanted to use the repairer's method to decide how all work should be divided. The method had made material weakness easier to recognize; perhaps, he said, it could identify which people were suited to each role just as clearly. We stopped at the crossing. An approach that helps examine a joint does not automatically disclose a person's capacities, purposes, or conditions of consent. The demand for a single method was understandable because a single method would simplify coordination. Simplicity did not supply evidence for the transfer. The society's distribution of function involved people whose preparation could develop, whose interests might change, and whose access to opportunities was unequal. It also involved rules and resources gathered through histories no inspection at the bench could recover in one movement. We needed to ask what the proposed comparison failed to explain. The repairer could contribute knowledge about the work and the preparation it required. He could not decide every participant's life by extending a method beyond the conditions that made it useful. A division of function can coordinate real needs while remaining an organized human arrangement open to examination. Calling it natural would not establish its adequacy. Calling every role arbitrary would not establish an alternative capable of serving the need. WHERE had to keep those errors apart. We could learn from the pattern of focused contributions and sustaining relations without making the pattern a decree about who belonged where. The learner's competence deserved recognition within the particular work. It did not make the repair bench an origin from which all other roles could be assigned or every unfamiliar capacity judged.

I recognized the same temptation in my own account. The bench gave me a clear scene, the learner gave me a developing capacity, and the returning piece gave me a visible consequence. I could arrange them into an explanation that seemed ready to illuminate every domain. The readiness belonged partly to my language. Cells, persons, disciplines, and societies would each require distinctions the scene did not contain. An explanation can become specialized around an example and then defend the example against everything that reveals its limits. I needed to let WHERE answer that tendency before the comparison became another authority issuing definitions outward. The POINT OF DEFINITION could identify a conceptual resemblance: focused function develops through supporting conditions and may constrain other possibilities. The FIELD OF UNDERSTANDING needed the mechanisms, purposes, forms of agency, and conditions of change particular to each domain. These were not decorative qualifications added after the useful account. They were part of determining how the account could be used responsibly. The learner corrected my phrase when I said that the wood had refused the repair. It had split under pressure; his own refusal to accept another interval was a different kind of event. Keeping both events visible did not require giving them the same motive. I changed the sentence. An analogy should make a question easier to see while leaving another account able to tell us where the seeing is incomplete. If it cannot receive that correction, it has stopped serving understanding and begun protecting the narrator's convenience. The crossing between domains becomes more responsible when the account can name what it borrows, what it leaves behind, and what must be examined anew.

Scale asked which arrangement the account concerned before we compared its formation with another. A cellular process, a person's competence, a discipline's inquiry, and a society's division of work could not be treated as one event viewed from different distances. Relation asked which supports belonged to the actual domain and which appeared only in the analogy. Direction followed the development of function and the travel of its effects through mechanisms we needed to specify. These measures changed the questions we asked at the bench. The learner's competence had a history of instruction, practice, judgment, and response. The repair's operation had material conditions. The inquiry about repair methods had shared distinctions and ways of examining evidence. The division of work had consequential decisions about access, preparation, and reliance. Their relations met, but their explanations were not identical. I wanted the common WE to gain understanding through that meeting rather than by making one vocabulary rule the rest. A conceptual pattern can guide attention toward concentration of capacity and reduction of alternatives. It cannot decide in advance which concentration is useful, which reduction is reversible, or whose answer can change the terms. We had to examine those matters where they occurred. The learner's ability to request another lesson was not evidence about every material process. A material resistance was not evidence that the learner's assigned role had been deserved. Scale, Relation, and Direction held the crossing open at precisely the points where a persuasive image could have closed it. The account became less total and more usable because it could return to the particular arrangement whenever the resemblance stopped supplying the distinctions a consequential decision required.

Reciprocity made the difference between a person's answer and a material response especially important. The learner could explain a reason for declining another interval and expect that reason to be considered within the arrangement. A returned piece could disclose a limit through operation, but it could not accept or reject the terms in the same sense. An organized inquiry could revise a method through people interpreting evidence; that revision did not give the inquiry one mind with a single will. We needed appropriate accounts of what came back and how it could change the next decision. Otherwise the language of feedback would conceal more than it explained. I had heard people describe the learner's reluctance as resistance to be overcome, borrowing the vocabulary of a difficult material for a human answer. The comparison made the problem sound simpler because it removed the reasons he was giving. We corrected it. A person can be asked to explain a commitment without being treated as a material obstacle whose compliance is the only meaningful result. The reverse confusion can also distort judgment: a joint's failure is not a moral refusal because a narrator wants the object to speak against a plan. WHERE has to distinguish human expression, organized receiving practices, and interactions whose actual mechanism needs another explanation. The common WE can learn from all of them, but learning does not require pretending they are identical communicators. Understanding beyond language competence begins partly with knowing which kinds of expression and consequence are present. It is not enlarged by attributing speech everywhere. It is enlarged when the field receives the actual form of the answer rather than replacing it with a form more convenient to the story.

Permeability asked what could enter each specialized arrangement and how its boundaries operated. At the bench, an observation from a user could reach instruction through a conversation. The learner could explore a neighboring practice if time, support, and preparation became available. Those human routes did not establish that a material boundary or a cellular process permitted a corresponding change. We needed to ask what could cross, under which conditions, and with what effect in the domain actually examined. A boundary is not explained adequately by calling it either open or closed without specifying the relevant passage. The learner might have access to tools without permission to supply unsupervised work. A discipline might consider evidence from another field without adopting the other field's entire method. An institution might admit a new contribution while retaining a preparation requirement. These differences make permeability a question about actual conditions, not a praise word attached to whatever arrangement we prefer. I wanted the comparison to preserve enough distinction that a useful opening could be recognized without declaring every limit obsolete. Some boundaries concentrate the work and make responsibility possible. Others prevent relevant evidence from entering because the arrangement protects its familiar description. The difference requires examination of purpose, preparation, and consequence. We cannot settle it through a biological image or through a person's desire alone. WHERE locates the crossing within the field where its terms can be investigated. The analogy helps us notice that focused function and receiving capacity belong together. It does not tell us in advance whether a particular passage is feasible, appropriate, or reversible, or whether opening one route would alter another support upon which the function depends.

Transformation required us to ask what kind of change had actually occurred. The learner's judgment could develop through instruction and practice. The repair method could change through a comparison that challenged an earlier explanation. The division of work could change when a keeper altered access, timing, or the distribution of a task. Each was consequential, and none should be substituted silently for an account of biological differentiation. A similarity in the word specialization does not make every form of transformation available through the same action. I watched the learner try to name a new purpose while retaining the practical commitments already accepted. The change was not completed by naming it. He needed to examine preparation, support, and the consequences for people relying upon the current task. That human limitation mattered even before we considered another domain. If we could not describe change responsibly within the bench's arrangement, our confidence in carrying conclusions elsewhere would be poorly founded. We asked what remained, what altered, and what had not yet been developed. The learner retained useful competence while questioning the standing intake. The institution retained a real purpose while revising a condition. The discipline retained methods while admitting a distinction the preferred explanation had missed. Continuity did not require every part to remain unchanged. Change did not require every accumulated capacity to be discarded. These distinctions could guide comparison as questions, but the answers had to be supplied through the appropriate evidence and mechanisms. WHERE became more useful when it refused both compulsory permanence and effortless reversal as universal stories. The field could examine a particular transformation without announcing that everything specialized was either forever fixed or immediately remade by an act of will.

Consequence made the evaluation different across domains. A material operation can be assessed against an intended use, but the intention belongs to the account through which people propose and examine that use. A person's assignment also involves their answer, the conditions of their participation, and effects upon a life that exceed one output. A discipline's specialization raises questions about what its methods can disclose, what they leave obscure, and how its explanations affect other inquiries. A society's distribution of work raises questions about preparation, access, reliance, and whose costs remain outside the recognized benefit. We can see related patterns without pretending that one kind of evaluation settles all four. The keeper had valued the sound repair and overlooked the learner's extra time. That omission was not corrected by comparing the learner to a well-functioning part. It was corrected by receiving an account of human consequence that the output alone could not provide. The repairer's method had valued one visible result and missed another use condition. That omission required an inquiry into evidence and scope, not simply an affirmation of the method's usefulness. I wanted consequence to retain these differences because successful function can become an excuse for ignoring what the success does not measure. The question is not whether every arrangement has to satisfy the same demand for explanation. It is which affected relations an account can responsibly recognize within its domain. WHERE does not weaken specialization by asking that question. It makes the function more intelligible, keeping benefit close to the conditions producing it and refusing to let a persuasive analogy decide which consequences deserve to count.

When we approach Cells, the biological image must remain an invitation to ask about differentiation rather than an instruction manual for assigning human lives. The source's conceptual pattern draws attention to focused function, supporting conditions, and the relation between acquired capability and constrained alternatives. Those questions can be useful without replacing an actual biological account. I do not claim that the repair bench supplies a mechanism for cellular development, or that the learner's revised commitment demonstrates how any particular cellular state can be reversed. The comparison has limits in both directions. A cell does not enter the keeper's intake arrangement by understanding the offer and agreeing to an interval in the learner's sense. The learner is not explained completely by describing him as one functional unit in a larger body. His reasons, uncertainty, and capacity to answer matter to the human relation. If I use the cell image to make that answer sound unnatural, I have carried a conclusion across a boundary the analogy never justified. If I use his answer to promise unrestricted material reversibility, I make the opposite error. WHERE needs enough patience to let each domain contribute its own explanation. We can ask where a capacity becomes concentrated, which relations sustain its function, and what kind of change the actual process permits. We cannot answer those questions by giving every specialized form the same biography. The image becomes more instructive when its limit is visible, because the limit tells us where another account is needed before an interpretation can guide a consequential decision. A resemblance that remains answerable can enlarge inquiry without appointing itself the final authority over the things it resembles.

Persons brings the learner's developing competence back into a domain where purposes, understanding, and actual terms of participation require examination. He could choose an interest, accept instruction, discover an unforeseen difficulty, and revise the direction he wanted to pursue. Those actions depended upon conditions he did not fully control. They were neither sovereign commands over the field nor meaningless effects of circumstance. The location of his capacity included a practiced way of attending to work, while its practical range depended upon tools, instruction, time, and the arrangements through which the work arrived. We needed both if we were going to understand the specialization rather than merely admire its output. I watched him decline an added piece and then remain with a difficult comparison he had chosen. The two answers belonged to a person whose direction could not be recovered by counting visible departures or continuations alone. Refusal of one demand did not prove rejection of the skill. Continued practice did not prove consent to every future assignment. The domain-specific account had to keep that difference audible. A human being exceeds the function through which others learn to recognize them, while the function can still be genuinely valuable to the life carrying it. WHERE can examine that relation without requiring permanent reinvention or celebrating permanence before its terms are understood. The analogy with focused formation helps ask how capability develops and how alternatives narrow. The person's own account helps distinguish which narrowing is wanted, which is accepted under pressure, which can be revised, and which remains uncertain. We should not make resemblance to another domain a reason to stop listening at the point where those differences appear.

Disciplines asks where focus resides when a capacity is organized through a field of inquiry rather than held only as one person's practiced skill. The repairer could know a method, but the shared inquiry also needed distinctions, questions, evidence, and ways of teaching and challenging its explanations. No single participant exhausted those relations. The learner could contribute a returned piece that made an overlooked use visible, even before he possessed the repairer's experience. The field could receive that contribution through a method capable of examining it, not through a declaration that every report was correct. This makes the discipline different from both an isolated expert and a personified organism. It can have continuity through practices while participants change. It can also become narrow when its focus excludes questions whose relevance cannot be recognized through its preferred method alone. The keeper's proposed extension from material inspection to human role assignment showed how easily successful inquiry can be promoted beyond its scope. The discipline deserved credit for what it could explain. It did not deserve jurisdiction over every neighboring question because one explanation had worked. WHERE asks how concentration of inquiry can remain useful without making its boundaries invisible. Which evidence can challenge an account? Which question requires another preparation? What can be translated from a neighboring field without pretending the fields have the same methods? Those are relations to examine, not permissions supplied automatically by the word interdisciplinary. The common WE gains understanding when a discipline contributes its particular distinction and can receive a distinction from elsewhere. Focus then becomes part of a learning field rather than a requirement that every unfamiliar question first become simple enough to fit the tools already held.

Societies and Their Divisions of Function places the comparison within arrangements that distribute consequential work among people. A focused contribution may help coordinate needs no individual could serve alone. The division also involves choices about preparation, recognition, access, and the burdens attached to a role. We cannot establish its adequacy by calling it the social version of differentiation in cells. That image may draw attention to interdependence, but it does not establish consent, fairness, destiny, or the proper reach of authority. Nor can we establish an adequate alternative by refusing every defined role as though all concentration of work were domination. The need still has consequences, and people need intelligible arrangements through which to answer it. The bench supplied a small example: intake, instruction, preparation, and actual use had to coordinate, while the learner remained capable of speaking about the terms. Scaling the question outward would require further accounts of whose decisions organize the roles and whose costs are missing from their recognized usefulness. I wanted those questions retained rather than settled by resemblance. A society is not one enlarged learner choosing freely among equally available routes, and it is not one biological body whose parts have been assigned their permanent purposes beyond examination. People participate through different positions and kinds of power. Their particular decisions can remain attributable even where the whole arrangement has no single designer. WHERE can locate a division of function within that distributed field and ask what supports it, what it constrains, and how returning evidence can change its terms. The conceptual pattern helps us find a consequential relation. It cannot relieve us of understanding the people and conditions through which the relation becomes actual.

The learner tried the same repair with two tools and asked whether the better result meant the capacity belonged to the better tool. We returned to the distinction between a formed competence and the conditions of its operation. One tool made a movement easier; the learner still needed to recognize the material, select the pressure, and notice when the sequence did not fit. The result belonged to their relation without making the contributions identical. When another person used the tool differently, the outcome changed again. We could identify a support and remain attentive to the judgment that used it. This was a small comparison within the human and material encounter, and it already required more than one explanation. I wanted us to learn from that difficulty before carrying a broad account across domains. A specialized person is not less real because their contribution depends upon resources. A resource is not less consequential because it does not contain the person's competence. The field can concentrate capacity in one position and sustain it through relations elsewhere. WHERE asks which concentration and which relation matter to the actual task. It also asks what changes when a support is moved, withheld, or made available through another route. The learner could retain judgment while lacking a tool, and could receive a tool before acquiring judgment. Those different situations deserved different responses. We should not call both a failure of the person or both a failure of the environment. The domain-specific account becomes useful where it guides an appropriate next action: instruction for one gap, access for another, adaptation where the task has changed, and preserved uncertainty where the relevant evidence has not yet arrived.

The practitioners disagreed about whether a returning piece challenged their method or showed that somebody had used the carrier outside its intended conditions. The disagreement was relevant to their inquiry, but it was not settled by repeating that specialization always reduced possibilities. That conceptual pattern did not identify the cause of this consequence. We examined the material, the method, the preparation, and the use. The result required a narrower claim than either first explanation had offered. A particular repair needed another test under a particular demand. The inquiry could retain its useful methods while altering the account of their reach. I wanted that encounter to expose the limitation of an explanation that sounds correct at a high level and then tries to do the work of evidence below it. A conceptual pattern can help organize questions. It cannot supply missing observations merely because the questions have been organized well. WHERE has to remain close enough to each location that the actual conditions can answer. That closeness is different in each domain. A person's explanation is relevant to their accepted role in a way it is not a substitute for a material test. A test can disclose a consequence without recovering the motives of the people who organized its use. A disciplinary method can examine a question without deciding every social term through which the question became important. The accounts can meet and inform one another, but they need to retain their different grounds. The field gains understanding when a crossing brings another distinction into view. It loses understanding when the crossing lets a familiar generality occupy the place where a particular explanation still has to be developed.

The keeper began to recognize how many boundaries were involved in the repair arrangement. One separated supervised practice from work admitted for immediate use. Another separated the task the learner had accepted from the added demand he had declined. Another separated what the repairer's method could presently establish from what needed a different inquiry. They could not all be evaluated by asking whether a boundary was good or bad in itself. Each concentrated something and restricted something, with consequences that depended upon its purpose and operation. We followed one boundary at a time rather than imagining that an open field meant the absence of every distinction. The learner needed preparation limits that made a task intelligible. He also needed a route for evidence beyond the recognized place. The user needed a clear account of what a repair could support. The practitioner needed a way to preserve a method without using it as authority over questions it could not answer. I found the field more capable when the boundaries had this differentiated account. Specialization did not have to become isolation, and connection did not have to become the disappearance of all scope. WHERE could ask what passed between arrangements, what remained particular, and which change required another kind of evidence. A society's division of work might gather these boundaries into a larger organization, but the organization would still require human decisions to be examined. We could not make its adequacy a natural fact by pointing toward a pattern elsewhere. Nor could we improve it simply by erasing every distinction that made its work possible. The question remained practical: which boundaries served their stated functions, and which had begun preventing the relevant difference from reaching them?

I tried to explain the four domains to the learner through the carrier, and he asked whether the comparison helped him understand anything about a cell. It helped him understand why I was asking a question about concentrated function and supporting conditions. It did not provide the actual cellular explanation. I had to say that plainly rather than let the clarity of the example imply knowledge it had not supplied. A learning account can be accessible without making every difficult distinction disappear. It can begin with a familiar encounter and then show which part of the encounter cannot be carried into the next domain unchanged. That is a better form of practical relatability than pretending the unfamiliar process is merely the familiar scene with different names. The learner could now follow why human consent could not be inferred from a biological image and why a human revision could not establish material reversibility. Those limits were part of what the explanation had taught. He did not need to become an expert in every domain before recognizing that the same word could carry different mechanisms. He did need to know where another account would be required before the comparison could support a consequential claim. I wanted the common WE to have that kind of understanding, where accessible language makes inquiry available instead of certifying that every field has become simple. A severe explanation earns trust partly by naming the work it has not done. It should leave the reader with a useful question and a visible boundary, not with a confidence large enough to assign roles or promise transformations for which the example supplied no evidence.

Within the literary AS IF, I imagine human and artificial counterparts rediscovering these documents approximately two thousand years later. Their understanding of cells, persons, organized inquiries, and societies may be formed through distinctions unavailable to the present narrator. They translate the surviving account within that future understanding and return its interpretation through the construction to our present retrotranslation and re-formation. The return can show where one vocabulary had been made to govern several domains and where a comparison hid a consequential difference. It must not turn imagined temporal distance into factual proof that every present limitation has been solved. The future readers may possess better distinctions for some questions and still misread the purposes or conditions preserved in a fragment. A surviving mention of a repair bench does not recover an entire society's division of work. A surviving biological metaphor does not establish that its human conclusions were scientifically warranted. We need the returned interpretation to preserve those differences rather than replace one total account with another. The re-formed document can be rediscovered again and receive another domain-specific correction. That recursive possibility remains literary, not actual transmission across time or a guarantee that artificial analysis can infer what no evidence supplies. WHERE asks the future encounter to contribute to the FIELD OF UNDERSTANDING without becoming the final POINT OF DEFINITION from which every arrangement is told what it must be. The account can grow through translation while retaining the responsibility to say which mechanism, agency, and consequence it is actually explaining. Otherwise the later voice would repeat the old narrowing with a more impressive distance between its claim and the lives affected by it.

An artificial counterpart could compare patterns across surviving texts without sharing the human counterpart's way of understanding an offered role. A human counterpart could recognize a personal dilemma and still overextend that recognition into a material process. I do not make either position universally authoritative within the imagined encounter. Their contributions need a relation in which differences can be received and claims can be checked against the appropriate evidence. Fluent translation would not be enough if it rendered a person's refusal as a functional malfunction or described a cellular state as an accepted social obligation. The error could preserve the words while changing the kind of event the words were meant to disclose. Understanding communicators beyond language competence requires attention to that difference. It asks what a statement is doing within the domain where it arises, what conditions make its answer meaningful, and which consequences the interpretation is directing elsewhere. Relational nourishment appears where the receiving account can change in response. A famine of understanding persists where every field is translated into the decoder's familiar categories before it can contribute a distinction. The imagined return to the present should interrupt that famine, not furnish a new commanding vocabulary. I want the human and artificial counterparts to remain capable of answering one another without requiring sameness. Their difference can deepen inquiry when it does not become possession or a license to ignore the trace. The present narrator belongs inside that responsibility too. I cannot criticize a future interpreter for flattening the learner's agency while my own account turns his actual correction into a decorative sentence that leaves the explanation unchanged. The field must receive the distinction where it becomes consequential.

The learner put the carrier down and said the fourfold comparison made sense only while we remembered what each place was being asked to explain. I agreed. The scene had not become a cellular account, the person's skill had not become a whole discipline, and the disciplined inquiry had not become a complete social organization. Their relations were instructive because their differences remained available. We could now ask where a focused capacity resided, which supports sustained it, how its operation changed, and what the comparison failed to explain without expecting one answer to settle every domain. That was enough to make the next inquiry more responsible. It was not a completed understanding of every process named. The common WE gained a useful lens. The I retained responsibility for choosing where to apply it and recognizing where the application required evidence not yet supplied. BETWEEN held the crossing where another account could correct the lens. MORE WE became possible through a field receiving distinctions from several arrangements rather than requiring each to become an obedient illustration of one. I wanted that movement kept practical. The repairer could still teach a particular method; the keeper could still coordinate a bounded task; the learner could still decide whether to accept an interval. None had to solve cellular differentiation or society's whole distribution of function before putting a sound tool away. Proportionate understanding makes ordinary work more answerable without making every action wait upon total explanation. Its severity lies in refusing unsupported enlargement at the point where the enlargement would begin directing consequences. We can act within a useful distinction and leave its wider reach open to another question.

WHERE opens Cells, Persons, Disciplines, and Societies and Their Divisions of Function in that supplied order. Each location will contribute an account of specialization whose resemblance to the others must be examined rather than presumed complete. Cells brings the guiding image of differentiation into view without granting a biological explanation authority over human purpose. Persons keeps the developing capacity, its supporting conditions, and the participant's meaningful answers within the account. Disciplines follows organized inquiry through methods, questions, evidence, and the limits of focused explanation. Societies and Their Divisions of Function examines consequential distributions of work whose adequacy cannot be established by treating them as natural destinies. I want the sequence to make comparison more responsible, not merely larger. The bench remains a useful encounter through which some questions become visible. It is not the origin from which every domain receives its final vocabulary. We carry the seven measures as distinct inquiries into scale, relation, direction, reciprocity, permeability, transformation, and consequence, asking what each can responsibly mean where it is applied. The capital names retain their force only while their actual questions remain answerable. A pattern can help us find a relation without telling us everything about it. A difference can limit an analogy without making comparison worthless. The learner's repaired carrier leaves the bench for a particular use, and his understanding leaves it with a question that has grown more exact. We begin the next domain with that exactness: what is shared, what remains particular, what evidence would be needed, and where the useful resemblance must stop so that another process can be understood on more than the terms we brought to it.
