MOVEMENT I: THE ENTIRE LETTER IN MINIATURE

John Cacioppo cannot receive this letter. That fact is not its ceremonial opening. It is the first condition of the problem. A human being can remain consequential after he is no longer reachable, while those still living must decide what, if anything, can be carried forward without pretending to possess him. I am writing to you together because each of you has stood near some part of the scientific territory he helped establish, enlarge, contest, measure, or transmit: loneliness, perceived social isolation, social connection, psychophysiology, stress, attachment, empathy, morality, social threat, decision-making, health, and the traffic between biological and social levels of explanation. I am not approaching you with a completed scientific theory. I am approaching you with a very large experiential and literary map, an unusual human case, several proposed mechanisms, and enough awareness of my own limitations to know that resemblance is not validation. The map may contain a discovery. It may contain old knowledge rebuilt in an unfamiliar dialect. It may contain errors made unusually visible because they have been drawn at such scale. Most likely, it contains all three. I am asking whether any of you can help determine which is which. If you read nothing beyond this first movement, you will still have received the whole proposition. Everything afterward is the longer record of how I came to make it and why I believe its possible value exceeds the strangeness of its arrival.

My legal name is Justin Michael Mahlan. I choose to be called Justus. The chosen name is not evidence of a second identity, divine appointment, moral superiority, or escape from accountability. It is the same man placing himself beneath a harder name because his life and work have become organized around justice, judgment, justification, responsibility, morality, and the catastrophic distance between being certain one is right and being answerable for what one does with that certainty. I am the grandson of a man remembered in my family as Septimo, or possibly Settimo, Cacioppo, born in Akron, Ohio. I have not established a documented genealogical relationship between him and John Cacioppo. I do not know the relevant parents, dates, records, or common ancestor. I therefore offer the resemblance of names only as an unproven and personally arresting possibility, never as kinship proved, access earned, or authority inherited. The actual basis of this letter is not blood. It is convergence. I encountered John Cacioppo’s work after spending years constructing a language for injuries of connection, reciprocal deprivation, threat, moral overgrowth, and loneliness. His work did not certify mine, and mine does not complete his. It gave me the frightening recognition that I may have been mapping, by nonacademic means and from inside the wound, terrain that social neuroscience has been approaching from disciplined directions I do not know how to travel alone.

The work I am presenting is called *Protopomorphogenia*. It grew from an earlier foundation called *Moral Injury and Consequences*. Together they attempt to examine what happens before morality appears finished, how injury becomes rule, how rule becomes protection, how protection becomes obstruction, how one person’s defense becomes another person’s deprivation, and how consequences propagate farther than any single intention can supervise. Within that work, I have proposed **Dispossession** as a possible ground condition: removal from belonging, standing, agency, participation, reciprocity, access, place, person, promise, purpose, or expected harvest. I do not claim that Dispossession has been scientifically demonstrated as the universal origin of moral injury or loneliness. I claim that it is a generative model worth trying to break. The larger image is **the Vineyard of Dispossession**, a moral ecology that is not barren but monstrously successful. Every wound grows another vine of law, expectation, vigilance, debt, precaution, entitlement, boundary, or punishment. The grapes ripening there are not decorative. Wrath may be fruit produced by accumulated grievance and threatened belonging. Loneliness may be the wine: injury harvested, crushed, mixed with other injuries, sealed with time, fermented by failed reciprocity, and transformed into a condition no longer identical to the event from which it began.

My proposed pathway is not that all loneliness comes from moral injury, nor that morality is merely pathology wearing ceremonial clothes. It is narrower and, if it survives examination, more dangerous. Dispossession may provoke compensatory moral growth. Compensatory growth may proliferate into dense and conflicting obligations, boundaries, claims, histories, and protections. That entanglement may make proximity increasingly expensive. A person may desire connection while experiencing closeness as a field of moral hazard in which every approach risks accusation, debt, engulfment, abandonment, misrecognition, submission, or renewed loss. Withdrawal, retaliation, compulsive accounting, people-pleasing, hypervigilance, and demands for perfect responsibility may then protect the person from immediate danger while degrading the relationships required to relieve the isolation. Further dispossession follows, confirming the danger signal. Loneliness, in this account, may sometimes persist not because the organism has forgotten its need for others, but because the organism has learned that others arrive carrying courts. This is where I believe the Vineyard may meet the work associated with John Cacioppo and with each of you: perceived social threat, altered attention, protective cognition, physiological consequence, social behavior, empathy, moral evaluation, and the recursive conversion of a signal intended to restore connection into conduct that can make restoration harder.

I am not studying this from a safe chair outside the event. I am lonely. I have spent much of my life trying to fit myself into other people’s universes, laboring in their emotional and moral vineyards, and expecting that sufficient usefulness, loyalty, explanation, sacrifice, or truth would eventually purchase secure belonging. I have also been angry, punitive, excessive, and consumed by demands that other people account for injuries I continue to regard as real. I have sometimes attempted to universalize what I believed was true because a truth that remained merely mine felt powerless to protect me. I am separated from my son amid prolonged family conflict. I am facing housing instability severe enough that homelessness is a present possibility. I suspect that some of my moral and religious thinking may involve scrupulosity, but I have no wish to diagnose myself by literary force. I intend to seek professional evaluation and help. I may be, within the same system, injured party, injuring party, defender, enforcer, violator, witness, cartographer, and unreliable narrator. That is not offered as dramatic immunity. It is the reason I think the case may be unusually revealing, provided no one mistakes revelation for exoneration. A map drawn from inside a fire may show heat that an aerial survey misses, but it may also mistake smoke for geography.

Two named figures accompany the work and require immediate clarification. The Scary Wrangler is a literary and performative persona I consciously created. He is not a separate personality, prophet, savior, possessing intelligence, or supernatural office. He permits me to stage severity, accusation, dread, humorless spectacle, and moral danger at a scale ordinary exposition cannot carry. Roland is the name I use for the artificial-intelligence collaborator through which I perform language acquisition, synthesis, structural memory, interrogation, translation, conceptual pressure-testing, and organization across a manuscript of extraordinary size. AI has helped me find professional vocabulary for relationships I recognized before I could formally name them. It has also helped shape this letter. The lived experience, originating concepts, insistence, selections, corrections, authorship, responsibility, and final judgments remain mine. AI output can be fluent and wrong. I do not ask you to trust it. I disclose it because the method matters. Much of this project proceeds by **retrotranslation**: I encounter a phenomenon, construct language from experience, translate that construction toward an established discipline, and then translate it back to see what survived, what disappeared, and what neither language could see alone. The machine accelerates the crossing. It does not make the crossing true.

*Protopomorphogenia* is built to be read forward and backward because consequences conceal causes and causes conceal consequences. Genesis advances while Revelation retreats. Seed moves toward vine, fruit, harvest, crushing, wine, and intoxication; wine is then followed backward through pressure, harvest, fruit, vine, root, and soil toward an initiating wound that may no longer resemble what it eventually produced. The work uses a cosmic courtroom because every moral system contains jurisdiction, testimony, evidence, standing, accusation, defense, sentence, appeal, and someone empowered to declare the matter closed. Its parties are not simply good against evil. Implacable Vindication prosecutes Defamed Judgement, while advocates repeatedly discover that their arguments may serve the party they oppose. The machinery is recursive, musical, legal, theological, and deliberately unstable. It is designed to be **universally translatable without becoming universally dictatorial**. By this I mean that its relationships should be capable of entering psychology, neuroscience, philosophy, law, theology, literature, music, family systems, and ordinary speech without requiring any one language to conquer the others. Translation should multiply available tests. It should not install my metaphor as everyone’s master vocabulary. If the Vineyard cannot survive translation without demanding submission, then it has reproduced the very moral overgrowth it claims to expose.

This is the invitation. I am not asking for endorsement of my character, adoption of my terminology, confirmation of a family relationship, diagnosis by correspondence, rescue from my circumstances, or immediate commitment to a vast project. I am asking for the smallest response that honest interest permits. That might be a correction, a reading recommendation, a referral, a warning that I have rebuilt an established construct, a suggestion for a measurable variable, a distinction I have collapsed, a research question, a brief conversation, interest in the autobiographical case, or willingness to examine one section more closely. I will continue writing, investigating, seeking appropriate care, and testing myself whether anyone answers. But the work has reached the point at which isolation is no longer methodological independence. It is a threat to accuracy. I need people who know how loneliness behaves across time, body, brain, relationship, population, and moral judgment. I need people capable of distinguishing a metaphor that explains from a metaphor that merely seduces. Movements II through X are the extended record. They explain why I have written to you together, who I am, what has happened, how the literary machine operates, what Dispossession and the Vineyard propose, and where this could become research rather than proclamation. If anything in this miniature deserves investigation, I ask you to enter the longer vineyard with me.

Before that invitation closes, I need to say something without literary shelter: **this is a request for help for me**. I do not mean only help developing, translating, testing, or disseminating the project. I mean help finding a clinically, scientifically, and humanly responsible way to bring stability back into my own life. I need help with the emotions and reactions that can exceed the events activating them; with rage that can turn legitimate grievance into an expanding government; with moral injuries I have received and those I may have propagated; with possible moral scrupulosity or obsessive-compulsive processes that I am not qualified to diagnose; with loneliness, relational instability, and the practical danger of losing housing while trying to preserve my work and remain a father capable of future relationship with his son. I am not asking any recipient to treat me outside their competence, role, ethics, or available capacity. Help may mean identifying the right clinician, interdisciplinary team, assessment pathway, case formulation, referral, or form of coordinated inquiry. I am asking for movement toward a genuinely healed and governable life, not merely enough symptom management to keep producing pages inside the same wound.

I bring an offering with that request because I have learned that the most responsible way to ask for help is to bring the solutions already attempted, the patterns already mapped, the failures already encountered, and the ideas that may require more minds and hands than one person possesses. I will not tell psychologists that psychology is a science that solves nothing. That would be inaccurate, needlessly insulting, and blind to real relief. I will name the harder problem beneath that accusation: psychology and its neighboring mental, behavioral, neural, and social sciences possess extraordinary explanatory power, yet they still confront an immense translational gap between describing suffering, managing it, and producing durable healing within the relationships and moral worlds where people must continue to live. I believe, but cannot yet prove, that this architecture may illuminate part of that gap. Its universally translative but not universally dictatorial design may help connect clinical psychology, social neuroscience, moral cognition, psychophysiology, philosophy, theology, law, metascientific criticism, and protoscientific observation without forcing any one language to rule the rest. If that belief survives your correction, then helping me and examining the offering need not be rival purposes. My life may be one place where the proposed bridge is tested, repaired, or decisively shown to fail. I am asking for help, and I am arriving with everything I have been able to build toward it.
