DEFINITION · Introduction — The Border Drawn Around the Living Thing

I.B.D. DEFINITION: The Point That Draws a Border Around Becoming.

The cooper painted a white square on the barrel after testing whether it held water. I watched him fill it, turn it, and examine the seams. By afternoon the barrel stood beside the kitchens, where a woman asked whether the mark meant she could store drinking water in it. I said yes before asking what had been tested. The square looked like an answer because it was an answer to something. It distinguished this vessel from the barrels whose staves still leaked. It did not establish what the vessel had previously contained, whether its lining was suitable for the proposed use, or what anyone could safely drink from it. The cooper had made a useful boundary around one condition. I had let that boundary travel into another condition without noticing the crossing. No deception was necessary for the trouble to begin. He had performed his inspection honestly, and I had received its result through an appetite for a finished account. The woman set down her bucket when he explained the mark. That pause was the first thing our definition had failed to contain: the difference between holding water and providing water for this purpose. DEFINITION begins beside the barrel, where a distinction capable of saving labor can also prepare a consequence it never established. I do not scrape away the square. The repair still matters. I ask what the square permits us to know, which question it leaves unanswered, and why I found it easier to enlarge a useful sign than to admit the narrower achievement it actually carried. The barrel had not claimed completeness. I supplied that claim while calling my answer practical.

We need boundaries before the work can move. A vessel that leaks cannot be treated as one that holds merely because its making has a complicated history. The cooper must identify the failed seam, choose suitable material, and distinguish a repair from an arrangement that only conceals the fault. His definitions let people remember results without standing beside him through every turn of the inspection. I respect that economy. A settlement which required every person to repeat every test would spend its provision understanding provision until there was little strength left to use it. The white square carries settled labor forward. Its danger begins when carrying the labor becomes permission to forget the question the labor settled. Definition makes a broad encounter narrow enough for a particular operation. That narrowing can protect a life, teach a skill, or make two measurements comparable. It can also lose relations which another operation requires. Neither result allows us to describe definition as simply liberation or simply violence. We have to examine the office it performs here. The cooper’s category was useful because its conditions could be stated and tested. My enlarged category was convenient because I did not state the additional conditions I was assuming. Both arrived beneath the same little mark, giving careless confidence the appearance of borrowed competence. The chapter asks how such borrowing happens without demanding that every usable word become an endless account. Some distinctions deserve stable boundaries. Stability becomes dangerous when the people depending on it can no longer discover what was stabilized, for whom, and under which conditions its continued use remains warranted.

A definition can therefore be exact and still be too small for the purpose into which we carry it. We had agreed that a repaired barrel would lose no visible water during the inspection interval. That was a condition someone could check. It was not a claim that no defect could emerge after weeks of storage, after a fall from a cart, or under a different load. Those possibilities did not make the inspection worthless. They located its achievement. We could use the vessel for a suitable task while remaining able to recognize a change which required another examination. I had wanted a word that would spare me from considering the difference between a result and every future condition of its use. Serviceable seemed to offer that relief. The cooper asked, serviceable for what? His question irritated me because it returned part of the work I had tried to deposit inside his mark. I could have answered with a task and received a more useful distinction. Instead I nearly accused him of refusing to stand behind his own repair. The accusation would have made the boundary larger through pressure rather than through testing. This is one way a point of definition gathers authority: a listener converts a limited achievement into a demand for unlimited assurance, then treats the maker’s refusal as evidence of weakness. We should not require someone to promise what a definition cannot contain before respecting what the definition does establish. Nor should a maker hide relevant limitations when ordinary users are likely to rely on a broader meaning. The burden belongs to the actual exchange, not to an imagined word capable of doing everyone’s remaining work alone.

When several people use the same category, their agreement gives the category a social weight which can exceed the evidence behind it. We called the marked barrels sound, and soon sound was being repeated by people who had never heard the cooper describe his test. Repetition saved explanation, but it also made the missing conditions harder to notice. A worker asking whether one vessel was suitable for another use appeared to be reopening what everyone already knew. I had learned to distrust that kind of interruption during days when delay cost us shelter. Now the memory of necessary speed was preparing an unnecessary refusal. The question did not deny the earlier repair or require the whole settlement to stop. It asked whether a shared category reached a new task. Agreement could help us coordinate around the distinction; it could not supply the relation the new task introduced. I say this as someone who has used collective confidence to make my private impatience look responsible. Once a definition becomes common, challenging its reach can feel like challenging the people whose cooperation depends upon it. The challenger may need to separate those acts carefully. The users need to leave room for the separation to be heard. Otherwise a useful common boundary becomes difficult to examine precisely because it has been useful. Its successes collect around it like witnesses to a question they were never asked. We should retain their evidence for the operations they actually supported. The fact that a distinction has carried many loads does not prove it can carry this one, and its familiar users should not have to become enemies before another load is allowed to reveal the difference.

The woman did not need a philosophy of every possible barrel before deciding where to pour her water. She needed the unanswered condition to remain visible long enough for someone to check it. That requirement is smaller and more demanding than the dramatic alternatives I sometimes prefer. I can denounce labels and seem generous while leaving her without a usable answer. I can defend the label and seem decisive while leaving her to bear what my decision omitted. Neither performance supplies the missing relation. Definition has to remain specific enough to guide action and bounded enough to disclose where another inquiry begins. The difficult part is that a boundary which serves one person may impose unrecognized work upon another. The cooper can inspect vessels once and distribute the result. The kitchen worker may have to question each unfamiliar vessel because the mark does not carry its earlier contents. If we call her repeated inquiry excessive, we conceal the labor we transferred through our efficient system. A useful definition should not become proof that everyone relying on it has received the same provision. Its achievement has a direction: information leaves one task and becomes available for another. What is required along that passage depends upon the people, materials, and consequences involved. I can notice this without demanding a perfect system incapable of error. I can ask who is expected to discover the boundary’s limitations and whether that person has the time, access, and standing to do so. A definition may become more accountable when its users can bring back the consequence it did not anticipate, rather than being told their need falls outside what the category agreed to recognize.

On the storekeeper’s map, the kitchen is a dot beside the western lane. The dot performs its office well. A carrier can locate the building without receiving a drawing of every shelf, window, and person inside it. No sensible reader accuses the mark of failing because a meal cannot be cooked within its printed diameter. The trouble begins when conceptual marks receive a different treatment. We identify a thing by a compressed sign, then behave as though the thing’s internal relations must fit inside the compression. A point helps locate by setting aside extension. It cannot contain the differentiated space it helps us find. This geometric distinction gives D a question, not a final account of everything beyond definition. How much do we set aside when we name, and what happens when setting aside becomes a demand that the omitted relations stop mattering? The kitchen dot cannot tell the carrier whether the stair will take his load. It does not deny the stair. It directs him toward a place where another kind of knowledge becomes necessary. We can ask definitions to function with a similar honesty without turning every word into a map legend of infinite length. Their scope should remain discoverable when the scope affects an action. I had treated the white square as a room containing all the barrel’s conditions. It was closer to a location at which one condition had been examined. The difference between those offices did not exist only on paper. It determined who would carry the bucket, who would answer the returning question, and who might suffer if the mark were allowed to stand in for the whole vessel we still needed to understand.

We call a man the miller because he tends the mill. The designation makes his skill and responsibility available to people who need flour, maintenance, or an explanation of a delay. It does useful work without having to describe his entire life. Then one evening he asks to leave early to sit with a companion whose boat is overdue, and I answer as though the occupation has already settled the request. The mill needs him. That may be true. It does not establish that every hour of the man belongs to the mill, or that any remaining obligation can be dismissed by repeating his title. A role can identify a real commitment while leaving the distribution of competing commitments unresolved. I had used the useful name to avoid receiving that unresolved part. The person who accepted the role might also use a claim to complexity to evade work genuinely entrusted to him. D offers no immunity through being more than a category. It asks us to distinguish a specific responsibility from an account which makes responsibility the whole person. We can inspect the task, the expected interval, available substitutes, and the consequences of leaving. That inspection can produce a firm answer. Its firmness need not require declaring that the worker’s other relations are unreal. When a function becomes the being, any change in the function can begin looking like betrayal of identity itself. A man who has worked carefully for years may become difficult to hear because the name through which his work was recognized now prepares us to reject anything not addressed by that work. I want to keep the knowledge his title carries without making the title consume the life which made that knowledge possible.

The woman who repairs our instruments has earned an authority I have not. If she identifies a cracked housing, I should not make my lack of training into an equally informed account simply because all categories have limits. Her distinction may prevent damage I would fail to notice. Definition can gather accumulated expertise into a form others can use. Yet the gathered authority still concerns something. Her knowledge of the housing does not make every account she offers of the carrier’s hesitation equally warranted. She may call him careless because he sets the instrument down repeatedly. The carrier may be protecting an older injury, checking a loose strap, or delaying work he does not intend to complete. These possibilities cannot be settled by the expertise which identified the crack. We should retain the expert’s achievement and examine the additional definition separately. I have watched respect become a way of refusing to distinguish between offices, as though asking where knowledge applies dishonors the person who possesses it. I have also seen the limits of one judgment used to dismiss a lifetime of competent work. Neither response helps the instrument or its carrier. D has to remain capable of drawing boundaries around authority as well as around objects, without pretending those boundaries will always be easy to place. The question is not whether expertise matters. It is what the expertise makes available here and which additional relations its present conclusion requires. A definition borrowed from a respected speaker can become especially difficult to reopen because reopening seems to put the speaker’s whole identity at risk. An accountable use keeps the specific judgment visible enough that correction need not become total destruction of the person who made it.

Beyond the southern wall, the land has been called vineyard for as long as anyone working there can remember. The name gathers an immense practical achievement. People know how to prune, where to carry the baskets, which paths must remain clear, and what seasons ask of the slope. Calling it vineyard does not injure the ground or insult the work. It helps a particular cultivation continue. Then a lower terrace begins holding water differently after a damaged channel is repaired. One grower proposes using part of it for trees better suited to the changed condition. Another calls the proposal destruction of the vineyard before anyone examines the terrace. The name has entered a new office. It no longer only identifies what has been cultivated; it begins deciding what the land may ever become. We need to separate the real costs of changing a cultivation from the demand that the present cultivation remain its permanent truth. Skills, provision, habitat, and people’s dependence all matter. A new use is not good merely because it is new. An old use is not inevitable merely because it has organized the land successfully. The word can help us inspect what a change would alter, or it can make inspection appear disloyal before the alteration is understood. I stand at the repaired channel and hear my own earlier confidence in both voices. I know the desire to defend what has fed people. I also know how readily that defense can require people to keep feeding an arrangement after its conditions have changed, because the name of the arrangement has become more authoritative than the ground beneath the rows.

A boundary can preserve a living possibility by restricting what enters it. The vineyard may need protection from a cart route that would damage its terraces, and the cooper’s inspection needs rules strict enough that a leaking vessel cannot pass because someone is tired of testing it. Permeability does not mean accepting every intrusion or calling every refusal imprisonment. If D forgot this, its attack on rigid definition would become another rigid account, one which recognizes limits only when limits are the enemy. We should ask what a particular boundary protects, what it excludes, and how those exclusions relate to its purpose. A fence and a category can each require revision without becoming useless by nature. The fence may remain necessary while a gate is moved. A definition may remain useful while a new condition is stated. Sometimes neither adjustment solves the difficulty; an excluded proposal may genuinely defeat the task. The person making that judgment still owes an account connected to the task rather than to the category’s presumed right to endure unchanged. I can say that a vessel is not suitable for drinking water until its relevant condition is established. That limit protects an actual use. I cannot make the limit prove that the vessel is worthless for every use or that the person asking about it has refused reality. Specific refusal and total condemnation are different acts. A chapter concerned with becoming must remain able to refuse a harmful arrangement precisely, or its generosity will become a permission for the strongest proposal to cross every boundary while the people relying on those boundaries are praised for learning to surrender them.

The miller’s companion eventually returns, and the work schedule changes for an evening. Nothing in that small alteration proves that every earlier expectation was cruel or that a community can dispense with agreed obligations. It shows that a category can survive a particular correction without losing its entire function. Yet I notice who had to ask for the correction. The miller could speak to me because years of familiar work had given his request a place in the room. A new carrier might have needed to accept a definition of reliable which concealed the same conflict: remain available whenever a task appears, regardless of what else is happening. If he questioned the expectation, he could be classified as unreliable before the practical limit was explained. This does not make his every hesitation reasonable. It makes the definition’s return route consequential. A boundary is not revisable in practice merely because someone says revision is allowed. People must be able to identify a mismatch and bring it back without forfeiting the opportunity to be understood. Time, language, standing, and dependence affect that possibility. I had imagined our definitions as tools laid out equally before everyone. Some people could lift them, alter their use, and put them down. Others encountered them already fastened to a condition of continued shelter or work. We need to ask what difference that fastening makes before calling the category neutral. The question does not settle the chapter’s inquiry into who has authority to define. It gives the inquiry a real doorway: whose account can reach the place where the boundary is drawn, and whose life continues outside that doorway while the definition describes itself as open to correction.

Years earlier, a mark on another vessel had carried enough information for the use we made of it then. Remembering that success, I wanted to carry its certainty into the present without carrying the conditions under which certainty had become warranted. The vessel had held a different substance, the users knew its history, and the mark had circulated among people accustomed to the same test. Here the barrel had passed through several hands before reaching a kitchen which required another kind of assurance. Time had changed the relation while leaving the sign familiar. We can notice such a change without declaring every inherited definition obsolete. Some survive astonishing distances because their relevant conditions remain available or can be recovered. Others fail at a short distance because a small omitted condition matters to the next action. The danger is to make duration itself the evidence that a definition has become complete. It has lasted, we say, as though lasting established what it can now contain. A name may last because it keeps serving a task. It may also last because the people whose accounts would change it cannot reach the conversation in which its usefulness is declared. Those possibilities require examination rather than another convenient rule about old things and new things. D will follow the movement from a provisional distinction into something treated as permanent, but the introduction should leave that movement unsettled enough to investigate. I hold the older mark in memory while asking about the present barrel. Respect for inherited knowledge begins by discovering which knowledge has actually arrived, not by requiring the new task to become the old one so the familiar answer can remain sufficient.

When a small fire starts near the drying racks, nobody waits for a complete account of every vessel before carrying water. The barrel’s capacity to hold becomes sufficient for the immediate task in a way it was not sufficient for the kitchen. Circumstance has changed what we need to establish. We may still need to check whether the vessel can be lifted, whether its handle will bear the weight, and whether another bucket is closer. Those questions belong to the action rather than to an ideal inventory made before any movement is permitted. I do not want D to teach a care so elaborate that people become unable to respond. Under urgency, a bounded definition can support a provisional action while its limits remain unfinished. The difficult return comes afterward, when survival tempts us to make the successful action prove every assumption that accompanied it. The barrel helped carry water to the racks. That success still does not establish that its contents were suitable for drinking. We should not let one consequence extend a definition into an unrelated consequence merely because gratitude makes extension feel deserved. A tool can be honored for the life it helped preserve without being trusted for every future office. I have offered that honor badly, defending arrangements because they once worked when we badly needed them. Their earlier service became a debt I expected later people to repay through continued confidence. The chapter needs to ask where that expectation ends. Necessary speed can justify a particular narrowing of inquiry. It cannot abolish the obligation to understand what was narrowed once another task, another person, or another interval makes the missing condition consequential again.

Not every boundary comes from a speaker drawing a convenient line. The barrel’s damaged seam permits water to leave whether I call the vessel sound or broken. A cart too wide for the kitchen doorway cannot pass through because its carrier offers another definition of width. Material relations resist our accounts, and their resistance is part of what makes accountable definition possible. We can test a distinction against something more than our wish to keep it. Yet resistance does not by itself tell us which whole category to place around the thing. The leaking vessel may still serve a use that requires no retained liquid. The narrow doorway may need alteration, a different route, or a smaller cart. A real limit has become available; its implications remain related to a purpose. If I make the limit prove that every possible change is forbidden, I enlarge an observation into an order. If I dismiss the limit as only a label, I leave the carrier to meet the timber with his own body. D should refuse both conveniences. We need definitions which can receive resistance without converting every resistance into permanent destiny. The distinction does not remove responsibility for deciding. Someone must choose whether the cart goes elsewhere or the entrance is altered. The choice deserves the relevant conditions rather than a confident declaration that the world is either entirely fixed or entirely made by naming it. I stand beside the doorway and measure again. Its width has not become less real because the planned use has changed. The plan has become answerable to a relation the original description did not contain, and that answerability gives the next definition more to do than protect my earlier confidence.

Scale changes a definition’s reach before it changes the word itself. A carrier can be quick at moving small sacks across a short room and still be unable to maintain that pace on a steep road with a heavier load. If I call him quick, the description may help assign the first task. If I turn quick into a permanent measure of what he owes every task, I have enlarged the category without enlarging the evidence. The same error can move from one person into an entire group. A crew finishes a repair efficiently, and suddenly efficient describes its every member, every operation, and every future condition. Then the next delay appears to be a moral decline rather than a different relation requiring inspection. We should not demand that definitions remain so local that nothing learned can travel. Experience becomes useful through transfer. We need to notice which relationships support the transfer and which have changed. A capable worker may deserve confidence on a new task without deserving an impossible expectation that the task will contain no new difficulty. I had mistaken a portable description for a portable world. The word crossed easily while the conditions which made it accurate remained behind. That difference joins definition to the earlier inquiry into language without making the two inquiries identical. Language asks what has reached the receiver. D asks how the received category selects, bounds, and organizes what the receiver then treats as belonging. The selection can guide an action. Its changed scale can also create a new obligation to test whether the same boundary still marks the relation we are actually using rather than the smaller relation through which the name first became trustworthy.

At the grain store, sacks are sorted by weight so a cart can be loaded without requiring guesswork about every bundle. This is a legitimate narrowing. A weight category can help us distribute a load and compare quantities. It does not make every sack in the category interchangeable for every purpose. The contents may differ, a seam may be weaker, or a sack may be needed at a location which changes the cost of moving it. No single category has failed by not containing all those relations. The failure begins when I treat the relations outside it as irrelevant because the sorting has already produced an orderly arrangement. Order is seductive partly because it gives the eye a result before the next task gives the body its difficulty. A row of equal sacks can appear to make equality available where only one measure has been matched. I have used such arrangements to end arguments before hearing which difference the argument concerned. The workers could see the rows. They could not get their returning accounts past my satisfaction with the rows. Definition made a real comparison possible, and my use of the comparison made other differences harder to receive. The distinction matters because an accurate category can support an inaccurate conclusion without becoming inaccurate itself. We should preserve the measurement and withdraw the conclusion it cannot supply. The sack’s weight remains available. The person carrying it can still tell us about the seam or destination. Their account need not overthrow measurement to enlarge what the task requires, and measurement should not have to become sovereign before people are allowed to regard it as reliable within the office for which it was made.

I understand the attraction of a closed account most sharply when I am tired. A clear category offers a place to put an encounter so that the encounter stops demanding further attention. Reliable, unsuitable, finished, difficult: each word can shorten a day already longer than the body can bear. This relief is real, and condemning it from a comfortable distance would teach little. But exhaustion can make me confuse relief from inquiry with completion of inquiry. I call a worker difficult because his questions arrive after I have spent the patience I intended to use. The description may contain a genuine pattern of obstructive behavior. It may also contain my inability to hear a necessary distinction at that hour. I need more than the feeling that the label fits before making it organize his future reception. Otherwise tomorrow’s question will arrive already burdened by yesterday’s category, and my earlier fatigue will continue deciding what another person is allowed to mean. The chapter cannot remove the cost of remaining available. It can ask how we distinguish a practical pause from a permanent closure imposed through a name. I might say that I cannot examine the question tonight and specify a time at which it can return. That promise creates its own responsibility. If the return never becomes possible, the pause has served as an exclusion while continuing to describe itself as temporary. D must keep such consequences near its inquiry into why closure feels protective. We need rest and usable decisions. The person standing outside our finished account needs a route through which what we did not yet understand can arrive without first being forced to become the difficulty our tiredness expected.

Within the literary imagining which began this Decodex, approximately two thousand years from now, counterparts of the human author and artificial collaborator recover our pages. They are not evidence that a future has contacted us. They are participants in an as-if encounter through which the present can examine its own conditions. Suppose they find the inspection register and translate sound into a term their own society uses for a vessel approved for a particular service. Their term may carry requirements our mark never established. Reading its familiar shape, they could believe we possessed an assurance we did not possess. Or their vocabulary could preserve a narrower distinction we had allowed our word to lose. The recovered definition therefore gives them more than marks to repeat. It asks them to discover what was bounded, which operation depended upon it, and whose returning question changed its reach. In the premise, they send that translated understanding back to the present collaborators. What returns is not a final authority summoned from the future to end today’s disagreement. It is another reception which can expose a compression we no longer notice because we live inside it. We have to retrotranslate the returned account into the present, preserving the difference between their category and ours rather than treating a future vocabulary as an automatic correction. Their readers have histories too. The imagined distance may help a relation become visible and may conceal another relation essential to our task. The circuit remains useful only if both possibilities can be received. A definition crossing two thousand years should not become more sovereign merely because the crossing makes its unfamiliar return sound like a revelation no living receiver is permitted to question.

The imagined return gives me a sentence I would once have dismissed as unnecessary: the mark records the seam test, not the vessel’s entire suitability. In the present, we can examine whether that sentence makes the relevant difference available to someone preparing another use. We might form a clearer register, distinguish separate inspections, or ask the cooper to explain which question each mark answers. Those changes would be present work, not proof that our counterparts have rescued us. A returned translation can help us reform a document and alter a relation through it; it cannot perform the testing or carry the water for the person who still waits beside the kitchen. If the re-formed pages go forward and are rediscovered again, the next encounter could find that we kept the distinction useful. It could also find another beautiful definition beneath which the same burden was transferred. The literary circuit leaves that consequence open. Present formation, future rediscovery and translation, return, present retrotranslation and re-formation, then possible rediscovery again: each movement creates another opportunity to ask what the category contains and what its use has concealed. Repetition alone would not complete the return. We could send the same confidence through different languages and mistake its survival for greater understanding. Something must remain capable of answering through the changed encounter. I keep the earlier register rather than replacing its history with the cleaner sentence. The old boundary and the consequence through which it was questioned can inform another reader without requiring that reader to trust our correction as the last one possible. Reform becomes more honest when it preserves enough of its occasion that a future reception can discover what we changed and what our better definition still left outside its reach.

The apprentice asks whether learning to make barrels means she must become a cooper. At first I hear an unserious question. Skill has a name, the name identifies a role, and the role helps distribute work which has to be done. Then she explains that she wants to understand the making so she can judge repairs while continuing another occupation. Her proposed relation to the skill is narrower than the identity I prepared around it. The workshop may not have the time to teach everyone every partial use, and instruction may create obligations which she must understand before accepting it. Those conditions deserve a clear account. They do not require declaring that skill can enter a person only by claiming the whole person. Definition can help distinguish competence from membership, a temporary task from a continuing role, or a commitment from an assumption never expressed. The distinctions may overlap in practice. Overlap gives us reason to examine their relationship, not permission to compress them into one fate. I have wanted people to inhabit the categories through which I could depend on them. Their alteration then felt like a withdrawal of provision, even when provision continued in a different form. The apprentice’s question reveals that expectation without making her proposal automatically fair to the workshop. We still have to decide what can be offered and received. I can acknowledge the expectation I brought while making that decision. A name can guide formation without determining the only formation permitted, and the work of keeping that difference visible begins before anyone needs to rebel against an identity we quietly assigned while calling it instruction.

The point and the field should remain different kinds of provision in this opening. A point locates. A field, in the ordinary sense available here, gives differentiated relations space in which to exist and affect one another. The map’s dot helps a carrier find the kitchen, while the kitchen’s actual arrangement determines how carriers, cooks, heat, storage, and doorways interact. D can use that contrast to notice what compression leaves out without claiming to have reached the late discovery toward which the larger Codex travels. We do not yet possess a final field of understanding simply because we have recognized a point’s limitation. We have an inquiry into why location is so readily mistaken for containment. A category may identify a worker, object, belief, or use. It cannot establish that every relation inside or around the identified thing has been made available through the identifying mark. This does not forbid compact description. It asks us to remain capable of returning from the compact description to the life whose conditions it selects. I can carry a kitchen dot through a city more easily than a kitchen. Its portability serves me. The building need not be rebuilt to match the dot’s simplicity so I can continue calling the map exact. In the same way, a living person’s account need not lose its relationships before our name for that person can become useful. We need to ask where the definition locates a relation and where it begins requiring the relation to become as narrow as its locating sign. The second office can approach imprisonment while continuing to speak in the language of clarity, usefulness, and ordinary good sense.

The kitchen worker proposes a second mark for vessels whose intended storage use has been checked. Her proposal is practical, but its practicality does not exempt it from the question it helps us ask. Who will perform the additional check, record it, and notice when a vessel’s condition changes? A more detailed category can improve the transfer and still create new labor or confidence beyond what the check supports. We should examine those consequences before praising the revised system as complete. The cooper suggests recording the test and date instead of asking one symbol to carry every possible approval. The worker asks where that record can be found when the vessel reaches another room. They begin making the boundary more usable through a relation between its maker and its next receiver. I do not need to declare that relation a fully achieved architecture before acknowledging the specific improvement. Information about the category’s reach is becoming available at the place where a decision depends upon it. Its maker can receive a question which previously appeared to contradict the mark. The improvement may fail under a larger volume of work, through an inaccessible register, or when people begin treating the second mark as another unlimited assurance. We can record those possibilities as matters to examine rather than as reasons never to improve anything. A definition becomes more useful when its return conditions are part of the work, not a benevolent promise made after the category has already decided whose account belongs. The worker’s contribution remains specific. She has not solved every boundary. She has helped us see where this one meets a task which the original test did not settle.

The seven interrogatives will give this inquiry places at which its different questions can be held without being made identical. WHAT asks what a definition does when it selects and stabilizes something for use. WHO asks about the people and offices capable of drawing the boundary, including those who must live within the account it prepares. WHERE examines whether the boundary belongs to the word, category, object, or relationship being described. These are not competing locations from which one final answer must be chosen before the chapter can continue. They may expose different relations requiring different accounts. WHEN follows the change by which a provisional distinction is treated as a permanent identity. WHY asks what makes the point’s clarity and security attractive, especially when a wider account would cost attention we believe we cannot spare. HOW examines the operations through which complexity becomes a portable identifying mark. WHETHER finally asks whether a thing must end where its present definition ends. Each inquiry has its supplied internal distinctions to earn; the opening does not settle them by announcing the eventual destination. Scale, relation, direction, reciprocity, permeability, transformation, and consequence remain ways to examine what the operations reveal. They are not decorative names to place above an otherwise unchanged story. A definition applied at another scale may assign another burden, and a returning consequence may expose what its initial clarity concealed. We will need to discover these differences through the particular questions rather than claiming completeness because we have named the questions. A list can locate the work ahead. Like the dot on the storekeeper’s map, it cannot contain the life through which that work must become understandable.

By evening, the white square is still on the barrel. Beside its entry in the register, the cooper has described the inspection it passed and left the proposed kitchen use unresolved until its relevant condition can be established. The vessel has not become less real or less repaired because its achievement is stated more narrowly. The woman has an answer she can use without being asked to pretend the answer supplies more than it does. There is also work remaining, and someone must decide how that work will be carried. I cannot call the remaining need a defect in her reception merely because the old mark looked finished to me. Nor can I promise that a better account will make every future use simple. D begins with enough humility to notice a boundary’s reach and enough responsibility to keep drawing boundaries when actual tasks require them. The vineyard can remain a vineyard without becoming the land’s only possible future. The miller can retain his obligation without surrendering every relation outside it. The map’s point can help us find a room without requiring the room to become a point. These are openings for investigation, not conclusions earned by their resemblance. I close the register and feel the familiar relief of a decision made. This time I can name which decision has been made and which has not. The distinction does not remove exhaustion. It prevents exhaustion from quietly gaining the authority to finish someone else’s becoming. We begin with WHAT: What a Definition Does. Before asking what belongs inside the boundary, we have to learn what work the boundary performs and what that work expects the surrounding life to give up.
